With Bath & Body Works 3 miles away, as well as Lush and Ulta and Carol’s Daughters and so on being within 10 miles, we have many places that could be or should be our competition.
We choose not to think about that, nor worry about it, either. None of those stores are our competition, even though they all sell skin care.
I remember when I started. I had jars and jars of the popular brand of scrub covering my counter top. Each had something nice about it, but there was a reason I decided to make my own. I knew I could do better. I knew I could do it more naturally, too. So I hit the kitchen and played like a mad scientist. It was one of the best days of my life. I had not thought about launching a business then, I only wanted to make a body scrub that included all the good ingredients and fragrances of the others and none of the unnecessary ingredients I thought should be left out.
And then it happened.
We started selling. We started getting a customer base. We started being asked if we had other products, so we created them, now having an entire product line. We started meeting other makers and doing more in depth research about what other brands were doing and how they were marketing. At that time I strove to be bigger and better and just like “them”. I thought I wanted to be in every store that would have us, and wanted to be a household name. We got defensive about our own growth and potential time frame.
And then it hit me.
The more I worried about what everyone else was doing, the less I was working on my own business. What a waste of time! Of course it is important to own your business rights and protect as much as possible, but at the end of the day, your customers are buying the you behind your products as much as the products themselves, and no one in the world is going to be able to copy that.
There will always be a bigger and more advertised alternative. There will always be “celebrity” brands. But their will never be another ScrubzBody™ Family and that is exactly what we pride ourselves on. Our customers not only get the best in hand crafted natural skincare, but they get the “us” behind the brand too. They get business owners who genuinely care about them. Who strive to understand exactly what they are needing and looking for and to serve that need.
They get the ultimate in customer care and service.
Those things are priceless and build brand loyalty. These are the things that the big stores don’t offer and we do. That is why we have no competition with anyone except ourselves. And that’s a challenge we accept!
